Why Should I Meal Prep?

I never saw myself as one of these ladies; the suburban wives who get all excited about their new Tupperware containers full of healthy meals for the family and an organized fridge.  I thought I’d be a city girl, living downtown and being a broody and mysterious artist.  I suppose you could say that the dreams of my 20’s have long been dead but honestly, my life is fucking awesome, and I love doing this shit.  What I’ve learned over the years is that cooking is an artform and creative act and that living in the suburbs kind of rocks.

There are a lot of “why’s” for meal-preppers.

  • Some folks are getting drained by having to come up with something to do for dinner every night.

  • Others are trying to cut down on expenses by eating out less.

  • A lot of people like having control over what they’re putting into their bodies.

For me, it all started with a FitBit.  My husband works a job that is extremely demanding.  I didn’t realize just how hard he worked until we got him his first FitBit and discovered that he’s taking somewhere around 35,000 steps a day and burning nearly 4,000 calories in an 8-hour shift.  He was always tired and hungry and regularly stopping for a burger on his drive home, which only made things worse.

So, I decided I needed to start making food that he could take to work that would make him feel better than fast food.  That’s where my journey began sometime around 2021.

Meal prepping isn’t for everyone but it works at my house and really frees my evenings up to do whatever I want without having to fuss with coming up with something to eat, making a grocery store run, and then cooking and doing dishes.  It’s also a good way to keep your finances in check.  I have very little wasted food and rarely eat out because my fridge is full of food that is healthy, satiating, fast, and easy.  Not to mention, I’m to a point where I keep a pretty decent variety around, which keeps us from getting bored.

I’ll admit that I also enjoy cooking, so meal prep day is actually a lot of fun for me.  I get satisfaction out of seeing my fridge fill up with my creations.  With that in mind, there are a lot of people out there who don’t particularly enjoy the process of meal prepping but do it anyway because of the benefits they get out of it.  If you’re one of those, check out my blog on how to make meal prep more fun because if you have to do it, you may as well enjoy it!
