HOW LONG DOES SIDEWALK CHALK LAST?

The longevity of a design outdoors is pretty dependent on Mother Nature. If weather conditions are dry and a design isn’t tampered with (walked on, etc.), it can last several weeks. It will slowly fade over time but as a general rule, under good weather conditions, my designs will last 10-14 days.

What happens when it rains?

Just what you’d expect: it washes away (well, sort of). I just a lot of layers of chalk when I work on sidewalks so the rain tends to fade my designs rather than erase them completely.

Is there a way to preserve them with a clear coat?

Honestly, I don’t know because I’ve never tried. Part of my attraction to chalk art is that it’s temporary. Even if I could make it permanent, I wouldn’t want to.

How do you clean it off the sidewalk?

A pressure washer is the best way to get sidewalk chalk to completely wash off. You can also use water and an old stiff bristled broom to scrub it off.

How long does it take you to draw a sidewalk chalk portrait?

That depends entirely on the size. They’re all a lot bigger than it appears in the photos. They generally take me the better part of the day. I arrive at sunrise and work well into the afternoon.
